If you’re a new homeowner, you can’t escape the task of finding the right HVAC unit for your home, especially a furnace to keep you warm during the colder months. To help make the selection process easier, we’ve created three groups for furnace performance to boost your knowledge: value, energy efficiency, and operation. We’ll explain in-depth what these groups mean to help you make the best choice.
Furnace Features
HVAC terms can be compared to a foreign language at times due to the confusing nature of the definitions and functions of each feature. For this reason, it is suggested that you contact an HVAC professional to guide you through all of the functions and equipment. However, it is also beneficial to have some knowledge of basic terms, like the ones listed below.
Value: Best value doesn’t necessarily mean the cheapest option. For example, Trane products have a variety of furnaces that deliver a high-efficiency rating with updated features at an affordable price.
Sound Level: There are units that create a lot of noise, which can be an inconvenience if you live in a residential area or a small space. Fortunately, furnaces have parts like blower motors and fans to limit noise.
- The Nominal Sound level, which is the unit of measure for sound, measures the average sound level in decibels. A higher number will mean a louder unit.
- For example: 45 decibels= Trane’s quietest HVAC system and 70 decibels= a vacuum cleaner.
Energy Efficiency: Furnaces intake energy like all other household appliances, there is a variety of units that consume different amounts of energy for the same results. This is why an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating exists to help you differentiate. The higher the rating, the greater the energy efficiency. This also translates to a lower energy bill. The standard rating should be at 80% while high efficiency stands around 90% or above.
Trane Furnaces
Most Efficient (TRANE XC95M): This gas furnace has an AFUE rating of 97.3%. With this type of rating, customers are able to efficiently save on energy costs per year. This unit is Energy Star Qualified with communicating technology that will constantly keep your home at an optimal temperature without inconsistency. Your energy bill will thank you for these features.
Quietest Furnace (TRANE S9V2-VS): This gas furnace has a heavy steel insulated cabinet that helps the unit run with minimal noise. The S9V2-VS is also Energy Star Qualified with an AFUE rating of 97%. It’s a great blend of energy efficiency and noise control.
Best Value Furnace (TRANE XB90): Efficiency, value, and quality are all of the qualities that the XB90 hold, which is why it is considered the best-valued furnace. This unit holds a 92% AFUE rating which solidifies a place in the high-efficiency category.
